Before last year, when I was a bride myself, I didn’t fully understand the benefits to the seemingly old Southern tradition of doing a bridal portrait session. I always thought I would never want photos of just me, and that I would rather just have engagement photos with my fiancé, but now, after being so happy that I chose to do a bridal portrait session, I say – why not have both??
Here’s a few of the main reasons I was so glad I got bridal portraits taken.
Trial Run – I always describe bridal portraits as the perfect “trial run” for your entire bridal look. You get to not only make sure the dress looks perfect in photos, but also your hair and makeup, jewelry, shoes and even your bouquet.
Confidence in your Decisions – Yes, it is totally fun to play dress up for your bridal portraits, but the really rewarding part of doing a bridal portrait session is the fact that you will get an entire gallery of photos back showing you (almost) exactly what you will look like on your wedding day. If you are questioning yourself or any of your decisions, such as which lip color or hairstyle you want, these photos can give you the peace of mind you need to confidently make those decisions and sleep like a baby the days leading up to your wedding day.
Fun Location Options – A big reason I was happy I did bridal portraits was because I was able to get photos in specific locations that I knew we would not have time to travel to during our wedding day. For example, if you’re getting married at a Barn venue, but really want some bridal portraits on a mountaintop – THIS IS YOUR CHANCE! Or if you’re getting married at a country club, but really want photos of you frolicking through a field of wildflowers in your wedding dress, Bridal Portraits are definitely for you! Think of all the fun possibilities!
Extra Photos – I always make sure to take a few bridal portraits for my brides on their actual wedding day, but many times these can be rushed and we only get a few photos of just them (definitely not an entire gallery). You spent a lot of time and money picking out your dress and all the other details for your bridal look, so why not get lots of photos to remember each little detail?
Southern Mamas – Now if none of the other advantages I listed really appeal to you, I’m not saying you need to do something you don’t want to do just to make your mother happy, because this is YOUR wedding day, and you can do whatever YOU want. BUT if all the other points are sounding good to you, another advantage to doing a bridal portrait session is to make all of your Southern Mama’s dreams come true. I have met so many mothers who are absolutely obsessed with their daughter’s bridal portraits and will order a massive canvas print to proudly display in their home (probably next to their own bridal portrait or the ones of their other daughters). They’ve waited your whole life to see you as a beautiful blushing bride, so let them revel in it! So if you’re on the fence, just remember these photos will 100% make your mother very happy.
Alright y’all, that’s my top 5 reasons I think you should totally do a bridal portrait session, but if you’re still not convinced, take a look at some of the gorgeous bridal portraits I’ve photographed recently. Don’t you want photos like these??!
And just for fun, here’s a few of my own bridal portraits, taken by none other than my Mama 🙂
That’s all y’all! 🙂 I hope this helped you decide if you really want to do a bridal portrait session or not. I would definitely 10 out of 10 recommend it!!
